Collection: North Coast Animal Collection

The North Coast Animal Collection is a heartfelt series of designs inspired by the rich cultural heritage, storytelling traditions, and deep connection to the land and waters of the Kwakwaka’wakw people. Each piece in this collection features a beloved animal rendered in a whimsical, childlike chibi style, blending traditional significance with a modern, playful aesthetic. These designs are deeply personal, rooted in my identity as a Kwakwaka’wakw artist and my love for storytelling through art.

This collection highlights six iconic animals, each with their own unique cultural and spiritual importance: Orca, Wolf, Grizzly Bear, Eagle, Raven, and Salmon. Each animal symbolizes qualities that resonate deeply within Kwakwaka’wakw culture and my own life. These hand-drawn digital illustrations use a painterly, textured style that adds depth and personality to every design, making them perfect for a variety of products.

The Animals & Their Stories

Orca Whale - Max̱’inux̱w

The Orca Whale design reflects the majestic and communal nature of killer whales, who travel “side by side” in groups—a trait mirrored in the Kwakwaka’wakw word maxinuxw. These powerful creatures are central to our stories and represent the deep connection between family and the sea.

Wolf - U’liga̱n

The Wolf is a symbol of loyalty, communication, and intelligence, embodying strong family ties and supernatural power. This design captures the wolf’s spirit with soft grey and pink tones, highlighting its wisdom and its role as both hunter and spiritual guide.

Grizzly Bear - Na̱n

The Grizzly Bear is a symbol of strength and protection. Known for their powerful presence, grizzly bears are revered as guardians of the forest. This warm, playful design reflects their strength and the comfort they bring to those who respect their space.

Eagle - Kwikw

The Eagle, “the master of skies,” symbolizes the bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Eagles carry prayers to the Creator, and this design celebrates their role as messengers and protectors, blending warm browns and golden tones to honor their grandeur.

Raven - G̱wa’wina

The Raven, the Trickster and bringer of light, plays a central role in Kwakwaka’wakw stories. He is both a teacher and a catalyst, having gifted the people with the moon, sun, fire, and salmon. This bold, black-and-blue design reflects his playful yet profound nature.

Salmon - K̓uta̱la

The Salmon symbolizes abundance, renewal, and prosperity. Essential to the survival and culture of the Northwest Coast peoples, salmon are honored for their life-giving cycles. This vibrant design showcases their beauty and significance in hues of green, blue, and purple.
